Sevanavank Beach Guide
Sevanavank Beach: Sun, Sand, and Serenity by the 'Jewel of Armenia' Guide
Escape to the shores of Sevanavank Beach, nestled on the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan, Armenia's largest lake and one of the highest freshwater lakes in Eurasia. This popular destination offers a refreshing escape from the Armenian heat, with stunning views of the Sevanavank Monastery perched atop its peninsula. Whether you're seeking relaxation, water sports, or simply a picturesque setting, Sevanavank Beach provides a memorable experience. While the beach itself is relatively modern, the adjacent Sevanavank Monastery boasts a rich history dating back to 874 AD. Founded by Princess Mariam, the monastery initially housed monks who lived a strict ascetic life. The peninsula on which it stands was once an island, but the lake's water level receded significantly during the Soviet era, connecting it to the mainland. The monastery's two remaining churches, Surb Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), are prime examples of Armenian medieval architecture. At Sevanavank Beach, you can soak up the sun, swim in the cool waters of Lake Sevan, or try your hand at various water sports like jet skiing and paddle boating. Several cafes and restaurants line the shore, offering traditional Armenian cuisine and refreshing drinks. Don't miss the opportunity to sample *ishkhan*, the endemic Sevan trout, grilled or prepared in other delicious ways. You can also explore the Sevanavank Monastery, climb the steps to the top for panoramic views, and learn about its fascinating history.
Transportation
From Yerevan, you can take a *marshrutka* (minibus) from the Northern Bus Station (also known as Kilikia Bus Station) directly to Sevan. The journey takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. Once in Sevan, you can take a taxi or walk to Sevanavank Beach, which is located near the monastery.
