Old Khndzoresk Cave Village Guide
Khndzoresk: Journey Through Time in a Cave Village Guide
Step back in time at Old Khndzoresk, a remarkable cave village carved into the steep slopes of a gorge in southern Armenia. This ancient settlement, once home to thousands of people, offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. Explore the intricate network of caves, churches, and dwellings, connected by winding paths and rope bridges. The dramatic landscape and the echoes of history make Khndzoresk an unforgettable destination. Khndzoresk's history stretches back centuries, with evidence of human habitation dating back to ancient times. The village thrived as a self-sufficient community, with residents carving homes, churches, and storage spaces into the soft rock. The unique architecture provided natural insulation, keeping the inhabitants cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Khndzoresk played a significant role in Armenian history, serving as a refuge during times of conflict. The village was gradually abandoned in the mid-20th century, with residents relocating to a new settlement nearby. Today, visitors can explore the Old Khndzoresk via a swinging bridge, one of the longest in Armenia, that spans the deep gorge. Walking through the village, you can see the remnants of homes, churches, and even a school. The Church of St. Hripsime, carved directly into the rock, is a particularly impressive sight. The area also offers hiking trails with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. While Khndzoresk itself doesn't have restaurants, the nearby village offers traditional Armenian cuisine. Try the local "zhengyalov hats," a flatbread stuffed with a variety of greens.
