Black Fortress Guide
Black Fortress: A Silent Sentinel of Gyumri's Past Guide
The Black Fortress, also known as Sev Ghul, stands as a formidable historical landmark overlooking Gyumri, Armenia's second-largest city. This imposing fortress, constructed entirely of black stone, offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape. Its stark appearance and strategic location make it a compelling destination for history buffs and those seeking a glimpse into Armenia's military past. The Black Fortress was built in the 19th century, during the Russian Empire's expansion into the Caucasus region. Construction began in 1834 and was completed in 1847. It served as a crucial defensive structure, protecting the Russian border from Ottoman and Persian incursions. The fortress played a significant role in several conflicts, including the Crimean War and the Russo-Turkish War. After Armenia gained independence, the fortress was abandoned for a period, but it has since been partially restored and opened to the public. Today, visitors can explore the Black Fortress's well-preserved walls, towers, and underground tunnels. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the fortress's history and military significance. The fortress also hosts cultural events and exhibitions, making it a vibrant center for the community. While Gyumri doesn't have a single signature dish, it's known for its hearty, traditional Armenian cuisine. Be sure to try the local kyufta (meatballs) and harissa (wheat porridge with meat).
