Goshavank Monastery Guide
Goshavank Monastery: A Medieval Center of Learning and Architectural Splendor Guide
Venture into the heart of Dilijan National Park and discover Goshavank Monastery, a remarkable 12th-13th century complex that once served as a prominent educational and cultural center. Founded by the renowned scholar and jurist Mkhitar Gosh, Goshavank boasts stunning examples of Armenian architecture, including intricately carved khachkars and a unique double khachkar. Its serene setting and rich history make it a captivating destination for travelers seeking a deeper understanding of Armenian heritage. Goshavank Monastery was established in 1188 after an earthquake destroyed the previous monastery on the site. Mkhitar Gosh, a prominent figure in Armenian intellectual history, played a crucial role in its development. He established a school and library within the monastery, attracting students and scholars from across the region. Gosh is also known for compiling the *Datastanagirk*, a comprehensive code of laws that influenced Armenian legal practices for centuries. Although Gosh died in 1213, the monastery continued to flourish as a center of learning for many years after. At Goshavank Monastery, you can explore the various structures within the complex, including the Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), the Church of Surb Grigor (Saint Gregory), and the library. Marvel at the intricate khachkars, particularly the masterpiece created by the sculptor Poghos, which features two crosses carved on a single stone. Take a walk through the surrounding village of Gosh, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Dilijan National Park. Similar to Haghartsin, Dilijan doesn't have a specific culinary tradition tied directly to Goshavank, but you can enjoy delicious Armenian cuisine in the town of Dilijan.
