Iguazú National Park Guide
Experience the Thundering Majesty of Iguazú Falls Guide
Prepare to be awestruck by Iguazú National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil. This natural wonder is home to the magnificent Iguazú Falls, a system of 275 waterfalls cascading over basalt cliffs, surrounded by lush subtropical rainforest. The sheer power and beauty of the falls are an unforgettable experience, making it a must-see destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The history of the park dates back to 1934 when the Argentine side was established to protect the falls and surrounding ecosystem. The Brazilian side followed in 1939. Indigenous Guarani people have inhabited the region for centuries, and their connection to the land is deeply intertwined with the falls. The name "Iguazú" itself comes from the Guarani words "y" (water) and "guasu" (big). Visitors can explore the park through a network of well-maintained trails and walkways, offering various perspectives of the falls. Take a boat trip for an up-close and personal encounter with the cascading water, or hike through the rainforest to discover diverse flora and fauna, including toucans, monkeys, and coatis. Don't miss the Devil's Throat, the largest and most impressive of the falls, where you can feel the mist and hear the thunderous roar. The park also offers opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and simply immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings. While not specifically known for a unique culinary tradition within the park itself, the nearby town of Puerto Iguazú offers a variety of Argentine cuisine, including delicious grilled meats and empanadas.
Transportation
From Puerto Iguazú, you can take a local bus (Andresito or Rio Uruguay) directly to the entrance of Iguazú National Park. Buses depart frequently from the bus terminal in town. Taxis and remises (private cars) are also available, but are more expensive. Once inside the park, a free ecological train connects different sections of the park, including the Upper Circuit, Lower Circuit, and Devil's Throat.
