Puente San Roque González: Bridging Argentina and Paraguay Guide
The Puente Internacional San Roque González de Santa Cruz, often simply called the Puente Posadas-Encarnación, is a stunning cable-stayed bridge that spans the Paraná River, connecting Posadas, Argentina, with Encarnación, Paraguay. More than just a transportation link, this bridge is a symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two nations, offering breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding landscapes. The bridge was named in honor of San Roque González de Santa Cruz, a Jesuit missionary who played a significant role in the history of the region. Construction began in the late 1980s and was completed in 1990, significantly improving trade and tourism between Argentina and Paraguay. The bridge's elegant design and impressive scale make it a landmark in both cities. While you can't walk across the entire bridge (it's primarily for vehicular traffic), the best way to experience it is to view it from the Costanera (riverfront) in Posadas or Encarnación. Take a stroll along the riverbank and admire the bridge's architecture, especially at sunset when it's beautifully illuminated. You can also take a boat tour on the Paraná River for a unique perspective of the bridge and the surrounding scenery. While in Posadas, enjoy the local cuisine, including grilled meats (asado) and empanadas.
Transportation
The bridge is primarily used for vehicular traffic. To reach the viewpoints along the Costanera in Posadas, you can take local buses that travel along Avenida Costanera. Ask the driver to let you off near the bridge viewpoint.
