Plaza de Mulas: Trek to Aconcagua's Base Camp Guide
Plaza de Mulas is the base camp for climbers attempting to summit Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas. However, it's also a fantastic destination for trekkers seeking a challenging but rewarding multi-day hike. Reaching Plaza de Mulas offers breathtaking views of Aconcagua and the surrounding Andes Mountains, without requiring technical climbing skills. It's a unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a high-altitude mountaineering base camp. While Plaza de Mulas itself doesn't have a long historical narrative, its significance lies in its role as the primary staging point for Aconcagua expeditions. It has evolved from a simple campsite to a well-equipped base camp with services like medical facilities, equipment rentals, and food supplies. The name "Plaza de Mulas" translates to "Plaza of the Mules," reflecting the historical use of mules to transport supplies to the base camp. The trek to Plaza de Mulas typically takes 2-3 days, starting from the Horcones entrance of Aconcagua Provincial Park. The trail is well-marked but challenging, involving significant elevation gain. Trekkers need to be physically fit and acclimatized to the altitude. At Plaza de Mulas, you can relax, enjoy the stunning views, and observe the climbers preparing for their summit attempts. While in Mendoza, indulge in the region's renowned Malbec wines and savor traditional Argentine dishes like asado (grilled meat) and empanadas.
