Experience the Devil's Throat: Iguazu's Most Powerful Waterfall Guide

Prepare to be awestruck by the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat), the largest and most impressive of the hundreds of waterfalls that make up Iguazu Falls. This U-shaped cataract, where the Iguazu River plunges with immense force, is a truly unforgettable natural spectacle. The sheer power and volume of water cascading down creates a deafening roar and a perpetual mist, making for a sensory experience unlike any other. The Iguazu Falls area has a rich history, predating European arrival. Indigenous Guarani people inhabited the region for centuries, naming the falls "Iguazu," meaning "big water." The first European to document the falls was Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541. However, it wasn't until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that the area began to develop as a tourist destination, with the construction of infrastructure to facilitate access to the falls. The main activity is, of course, witnessing the Garganta del Diablo itself. A metal walkway extends over the river, bringing you right to the edge of the falls. Be prepared to get wet from the spray! Beyond the main attraction, you can enjoy boat trips that take you closer to the base of the falls (prepare to get soaked!), or explore the surrounding rainforest on various hiking trails. The area also offers opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. While there aren't specific culinary traditions directly tied to the Garganta del Diablo itself, the Iguazu area offers a range of dining options featuring Argentine cuisine, including grilled meats (asado) and empanadas.

Transportation

From the entrance of Iguazu National Park (Argentina side), take the Tren de la Selva (Jungle Train) to the Garganta del Diablo station. The train is included in the park entrance fee. The train departs regularly throughout the day. Alternatively, you can walk the Sendero Verde (Green Trail) to the Central Station and then take the train.
