Prepare to be captivated by the sights, sounds, and flavors of this unique cultural hub. The Plaza Central has been the focal point of Humahuaca since its founding in the late 16th century. Originally a simple clearing, it gradually evolved into the formal square we see today, surrounded by important buildings like the Cabildo (town hall) and the Iglesia Matriz (main church). The plaza has witnessed countless historical events, from indigenous gatherings to colonial celebrations and the struggles for independence. Its very stones whisper tales of resilience, tradition, and the enduring spirit of the people of Humahuaca. A visit to the Plaza Central offers a variety of activities. Be sure to witness the daily performance of the mechanical figure of San Francisco Solano emerging from the Cabildo at noon, blessing the town. Explore the artisan market, where you can find unique handcrafted souvenirs like textiles, ceramics, and leather goods. Relax at one of the cafes surrounding the plaza, savoring local delicacies and soaking in the atmosphere. Don't miss the opportunity to take photos of the stunning architecture and the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. As for culinary traditions, try the empanadas, locro (a hearty stew), and humitas (corn cakes) sold by local vendors around the plaza.
