The area surrounding Laguna de los Tres has been shaped by glacial activity over millennia. The lake itself is fed by meltwater from the glaciers clinging to Fitz Roy's slopes. The indigenous Tehuelche people, who inhabited the region before European colonization, held the mountains in reverence, considering them sacred. The name "Fitz Roy" was given by Francisco Moreno in honor of Robert FitzRoy, captain of the HMS Beagle. The primary activity at Laguna de los Tres is hiking. The trail is approximately 10-12 miles round trip and involves a steep ascent in the final section. The views from the lake are breathtaking, especially on a clear day when Fitz Roy is reflected in the turquoise waters.
