Theth National Park: A Hiker's Paradise in the Albanian Alps Guide

Theth National Park, located in the heart of the Albanian Alps, is a breathtaking destination for outdoor enthusiasts. This park is renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery, pristine rivers, and traditional Albanian villages. It offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it a truly unforgettable experience. Prepare to be captivated by the towering peaks, lush valleys, and the warm hospitality of the local people. Theth's history is deeply intertwined with the traditions of the Albanian Alps. For centuries, the area was isolated and self-sufficient, developing its own unique customs and laws. The "Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini," a traditional code of law, played a significant role in governing the community. While modernization has brought changes, the spirit of tradition remains strong in Theth, evident in the architecture, customs, and way of life. Theth National Park offers a wide range of activities for visitors. Hiking is the most popular, with trails ranging from easy walks to challenging multi-day treks. Some popular hikes include the hike to the Blue Eye of Theth, the Grunas Waterfall, and the Valbona Pass. Other activities include exploring the village of Theth, visiting the Lock-in Tower (Kulla), and enjoying the local cuisine. Theth is known for its hearty mountain fare, including dishes like lamb cooked under a bell (Saç), fresh trout, and homemade cheese. Many guesthouses offer traditional meals made with locally sourced ingredients.

Transportation

Getting to Theth National Park can be an adventure in itself. The most common route is from Shkoder. During the warmer months (typically May to October), you can drive to Theth via a scenic but challenging mountain road. A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended. Alternatively, you can take a furgon (shared minibus) from Shkoder to Theth. During the winter months, the road is often closed due to snow, and the only way to reach Theth is by hiking over the Valbona Pass from Valbona.
