Shkodër boasts a history stretching back to ancient times, having been inhabited by Illyrian tribes and later becoming an important Roman center. The Rozafa Fortress, perched atop a rocky hill, stands as a testament to this long and storied past. Legend has it that the fortress was built by three brothers who had to wall up one of their wives alive to ensure its completion. This diverse heritage is reflected in the city's mosques, churches, and traditional houses. Visitors to Shkodër can explore the Rozafa Fortress, wander through the charming pedestrian streets of the city center, visit the Marubi National Museum of Photography (housing a vast collection of historical photographs), and take a boat trip on Lake Shkodër, the largest lake in the Balkans. Don't miss the chance to sample local delicacies like *tave kosi* (baked lamb and rice with yogurt) and fresh fish from the lake.
