Gjirokastër Fortress Guide
Gjirokastër Fortress: A Stone Sentinel Over the City of Stone Guide
Perched atop a commanding hill overlooking the historic city of Gjirokastër, the Gjirokastër Fortress is a must-see for any visitor to Albania. This imposing structure, a testament to centuries of history and strategic importance, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city's unique Ottoman-era architecture, earning Gjirokastër its nickname, "The City of Stone." Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore its ramparts, towers, and intriguing exhibits. The fortress has a rich and complex history, dating back to the 12th century. Originally built by the Byzantine Empire, it was later expanded and fortified by the Despotate of Epirus and the Ottoman Empire. Ali Pasha of Tepelena, a powerful Albanian ruler in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, significantly expanded the fortress, adding many of the features that are visible today. During the communist era, the fortress served as a prison and a military installation. Today, it stands as a symbol of Gjirokastër's resilience and its enduring cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the fortress's extensive grounds, including the clock tower, the American Lockheed T-33 aircraft (a relic from the Cold War), and the Museum of Gjirokastër. The museum showcases the history of the city and the fortress, with exhibits on traditional costumes, weapons, and artifacts. Walking along the ramparts offers stunning views of the Drino Valley and the surrounding mountains. Gjirokastër is known for its unique culinary traditions, blending Ottoman, Greek, and Albanian influences. Be sure to try *oshap*, a traditional fig pudding, or *pasha qofte*, meatballs in a rich tomato sauce. Many restaurants in the city offer traditional Albanian cuisine with stunning views of the fortress.
